Environmental Assessment of Air Quality in Baghdad Governorate for the Period (2018-2023)
Abstract
Iraq in general, and the capital Baghdad in particular, suffers from air pollution. The growing population in Baghdad Governorate, the capital and the location of most industrial and commercial activities, has led to increased daily needs and the demands of modern life, including various means of transportation, the number of which has increased in recent years, as well as power plants, oil refineries, and the use of electric generators spread throughout residential neighborhoods. This has negatively impacted air quality in Baghdad Governorate. The research results, based on the analysis of (145) daily models to measure the concentrations of suspended particulate matter, lead, and sulfur dioxide (SO2) in the air at three stations (Andalus Square, Al-Jadriya Square, and Al-Alawi Square) in Baghdad Governorate, showed that the levels of suspended particulate matter and sulfur dioxide (SO2) in the air of Baghdad Governorate for the period (2018-2023) exceeded the permissible national limits. Lead concentrations also increased in the air at some measuring station locations.
